What Is Sedation Dentistry?

If the idea of going to the dentist makes you feel anxious, you aren't alone. The staff at Presidential Dental Group understands that patients of all ages can experience dental anxiety, which is why our practice offers several different types of sedation dentistry options so you can receive the oral care you need without added stress. These sedative methods can help keep you relaxed and comfortable throughout your treatment, making your experience at our Washington, D.C. office much more pleasant. If you've been putting off necessary treatment because of dental phobia, we invite you to set up an appointment with Dr. Kami'Lah Brown at our office to learn about how sedation dentistry can make getting the care you need more comfortable for you.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

The type of sedative used for your procedure will depend on the level of your anxiety, the complexity of the procedure, and your medical background. We offer a selection of sedation dentistry services at Presidential Dental Group, including:

  • N2O (Nitrous Oxide): More commonly known as laughing gas, this sedative tends to create a relaxed, euphoric effect. Nitrous oxide is administered at our office using a mask that fits over your nose and mouth.
  • Oral Sedation: This option is administered in the form of a pill that you take an hour before your appointment to help keep you calm and comfortable.

With all of our sedation dentistry options, you will remain conscious throughout your treatment, though afterward, you may feel as if you were asleep. With oral sedation, you will need to make arrangements for a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment, as you will still be groggy. Our office advises that you relax and keep a good water intake for the rest of the day following sedation dentistry sessions at Presidential Dental Group. You will likely be sleepy and low on energy for the rest of the day, but these feelings typically disappear within 24 hours.

My entire experience with Presidential Dental has been absolutely amazing. The 1st time we spoke was at 4:30 in the afternoon and was able to schedule an appointment for the next day. When I arrived every single person on the staff greeted me. I waited for about 7 minutes before being taken into an examination room. I scheduled the appointment to address a come and go pain on the upper right side of my mouth. Thought I was going to have a tooth extracted. After the exam I learned that I would need to have 3 teeth removed. Makes sense as I had not been to the dentist in over 7 years. Saying "terrified" doesn't accurately give the full view of how scared I am of 'The Dentist'. 3 extractions? I told Dr. Brown that I would die before I had 3 teeth removed. She then explained to me the various studies and evidence that show how problems that start in your mouth can become systemic issues over time. Alzheimer's even pops up in these studies. But even with all of this evidence, she backed up, realizing how stressed and worried I was. Dr. Brown explained that she could call in a prescription that would help with my anxiety over the procedure. Done deal. We set a date 2 weeks away ( to give me time to process all of this ). I called my insurance company the next day to get some billing details and learned that Presidential Dental was out of my network. I told my dental administrator that this is where I was going because I was comfortable with how everything was explained and specifically Dr. Brown's professionalism. What stuck out to me is when she explained WHAT needed to be done. She stressed that she never says, "this is going to be easy". She said that what I needed done was straight-forward for her and her team. The day before my appointment I received a text informing me that my prescription was ready. I followed the instructions and arrived at the office the next day feeling unusually calm. Now, the reason I'm terrified of the dentist is because of my last visit. 5 needles to the gums - and I felt every one of them. When I explained this to Dr. Brown she said, "not today". She then applied some jelly-like substance on my gums and within a couple minutes I couldn't feel when I tapped against my cheek. Then she picked up the syringe! I barely felt the first one and don't know how many hits there were in total because I didn't feel anything else. 10 minutes later it was all done! Dr. Brown sat down with me and went over the post op instructions and then called in my prescriptions. I still had not felt any discomfort 2 hours later when I got to the pharmacy. Marked the time and then started the pills regimen. Woke up today with nothing but a very slight swelling in the area of the extractions - that has already gone down as I'm typing this 13 hours after the visit. There was not one aspect of my experience that could have been better. It doesn't seem possible that there could be a better dentist - or staff - than Presidential Dental. Thank you, Dr. Brown.

Always a great dental experience here. I was a patient for about 1.5 years and I only left because I moved out of state. I had cavity fillings, onlays, and regular cleanings and almost every appointment went very smoothly. All the staff was amazing too from the dentist to the front desk staff to the hygienist. It’s nice to be surrounded by women of color when you’re in a vulnerable and probably anxious state haha.

Great team, great music, great cleanings! Special shout out to Tiffany, one of the best most relaxed cleanings I’ve ever had!
